It’s about commitment. When you stand up there, in front of your friends and your family and the world, whether it’s in a church or anywhere else, what you’re doing really means something. You’re making a commitment. You’re saying publicly: it’s not me, me, me anymore; it’s the two of us together. And that really matters.

More or less exactly how I felt about marriage when I took those vows. About the two of us together, and soon about the four of us together.

Here I am approvingly quoting a Conservative prime minister. Guess that puts me about 50% of the way along the life-journey transition from champagne socialist to Tory anarchist.
